If you have encountered a case where you have tried to sync the clock of
a system and deployment/cleaning operations are failing stating the
certificate is not valid yet or has expired, there could be a few different
things going on.
But first, we need to delineate an aspect. There is more than one clock in
most systems.
Specifically, a Baseboard Management Controller has its own clock, which may
or may not be syncing with the "Host" clock of the system. It is important to
ensure that the Host clock in bios firmware settings is what is checked.
The best way to do this is to, on the console, boot into firmware settings,
and check the "Date / Time Settings".
In most cases, simple clock skew can be addressed through use of the
``ipa-ntp-server`` setting, however the Ironic community has become aware
of reports where even that does not remedy this issue. Investigation has found
some hardware also allowing a timezone setting to be introduced with a UTC
offset or localized time zone. It appears that when the ramdisk boots, the
ramdisk clock does not properly calculate UTC as a result, and believes the
time to be skewed based upon the timezone setting applied in firmware
settings. The Ironic community recommends that the only timezone used
set in a system clock is UTC, as Linux generally expects the system clock
to be in UTC.
Another option is the ``auto_tls_allowed_clock_skew`` setting in the
ironic-python-agent configuration file. It defaults to 1 hour. If you
find you need to modify this setting in your deployment, please notify
Ironic community.
